General Questions

Where is the office located? Or are you virtual?

Virtual primarily, but there are exceptions for certain types of services, such as an intensive session (2-3 hours) or an all day session.

What are your office hours?

M-F 8am to 6pm, last session around 5pm.  Saturdays are available as an option for intensive sessions or under special circumstances.

How long is a typical session?

Sessions are generally 60 minutes long.

What do I do to get started and make an appointment?

Email is the best way to get in touch with me quickly to set up a 15-minute consultation or an appointment.

What is therapy like with you?

I focus on helping you always feel as welcome, warm and safe as possible while you share with me the difficulties and challenges life has been throwing at you. Without judgment. The most important thing that helps this process is that you're able to feel trust. Without that Trust, the greatest "techniques" in the world won't help.

I've worked in every environment you can imagine, including family clinics, hospitals and a prison. I worked hard to gain the trust of more than 1300 people since I began practicing in 2006. No matter who you are and what you've been through, you can count on me to put judgment aside.

In addition, while many psychologists subscribe to a "listen only" approach, with little feedback, my approach is much more proactive and interactive. Guidance will be provided. You will learn about your mind, brain, body and emotions. We will collaborate like a team on your path to develop a new way to live and truly enjoy life.

What kind of psychotherapy methods do you use?

I use three different approaches to psychotherapy: IFS (Internal Family Systems), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and EMDR/BLS.

IFS has to be experienced to be truly understood, but it is a guided journey to the interior of your emotions, mind and body.

CBT is more of a focused conversation exploring your core beliefs about yourself, others, and the world at large.

EMDR is a very specific process focused on how trauma impacted you and using specific eye or body movement that science has found can change your brain's reaction to the event itself.

What can I expect in the first session?

We will begin to discuss and identify the specific behaviors and emotions that are challenging your life.  We will also discuss any short term strategies that might be available to alleviate certain symptoms (for example, how to get better sleep, respond to a panic attack, or ways to begin to lower the intensity of chronic anxiety).

What is the hourly fee?

60 min sessions (individual or couple/family) are $225
75 min session $275
90 min session $325

How do I pay?

Zelle, Venmo. Credit card can also be set up to be charged automatically (with a 3% service fee).

Do you accept insurance?

No, but we can arrange to automatically generate a weekly (or monthly) invoice called a 'SuperBill' that you can upload to your insurance company. If your plan allows you to see psychologists outside of their network (most PPOs do, even some HMO's), you may be able to recoup some percentage of the amount you pay, depending on your plan's deductible for out-of-network psychologists.

Can I cancel an appointment?

Cancellation requires notification by 12 noon the day before. See details of the cancellation policy for more information.

What is a free initial phone consultation?

I offer a 15-minute phone call prior to a client setting up a session to discuss questions you might have and for me to get a clear sense why you're "knocking on my door." This process helps you get a feel as to whether or not you feel comfortable talking with me.

What is the age range of your clients?

I work with people from age 16 on up.

How long will I be in therapy?

Two factors determine this:

1. How often a person is able to come in (once a week? twice a week or more?
And how long of a session (60 min? 75? 90?). Research has shown that psychotherapy is 'dose dependent': The more you have, the sooner you begin to feel better. Insurance companies tend to limit session frequency and length of time of a session, making the entire experience artificially longer. Imagine a 12 hour heart surgery that was only allowed to be performed 15 minutes per week.

2. The second factor depends on a person's history: both their personal experiences and their health. The more intense their life growing up (and/or traumas as an adult), the more treatment necessary. Current health issues, as well as quality of sleep can make progress take longer too.

The good news: IFS, CBT, and EMDR/BLS are wonderful at bringing the relative period of time it takes down substantially. If you're coming in for just a phobia or a panic attack, the time will be just a month or two. Everything else typically ranges from 6 to 18 months.

Do I have to tell you everything?

Clients definitely do not have to tell me everything. However, I do tell clients that you get out of therapy what you put in. So, if there are things that a client might be holding back that are contributing to their symptoms, then I would likely explore their reason(s) for holding back.

Do you offer video or phone sessions?

Video and phone are both available as an option.

I’ve never been to therapy or shared personal issues before. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Quite the opposite, actually! In my opinion, it takes a very strong individual to make the decision to reach out for support, and I am always honored to help someone through that process.

Is our work confidential?

Yes, our work together is highly confidential. However, per the state of California, there are some specific exceptions. For example, when a life is in danger or a child or elder is at risk for abuse. When we begin our work, I will provide further details of the legal exceptions that exist.

How long have you been in practice?

I have been a licensed Clinical Psychologist for 18 years, and have worked within the field of psychology for over 30 years.

What are your strengths as a psychologist?

I am passionate about delivering the best possible psychological treatment scientifically available, in a warm, non-judgmental manner.  You're tired of feeling this way, and want to get better ASAP.  Let's not waste any unnecessary time.

Have you been in therapy yourself?

Yes! I truly believe that being in individual therapy myself gives me the opportunity to experience what it is like from the client's perspective. It also makes me a better psychologist as it helps minimize the potential of my own personal history intruding into our sessions.

What is your educational background?

I have a PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology. CSPP is a non-profit graduate school system established in California in 1969 with campuses in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine and San Diego. CSPP is considered to be the nation's premiere graduate program for Clinical Psychology. My BA is from UCLA.

Do you prescribe medications?

No.

Are you licensed?

Yes. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of California, licensed in 2006. My license number is PSY21137.
