Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a combination of mental processes and physical sensations.  Mental = thoughts & images that are all about something ’bad’ (usually something a person believes they will not be able to handle, will be painful, very uncomfortable or sad) that is happening or will happen soon.

Anxiety is most evident when a person senses a variety of unpleasant physical sensations. This includes muscle tension (common areas include the neck, shoulders, lower back, jaw) sometimes accompanied by skull pressure & headaches, increased heart rate, higher blood pressure.

When these sensations become more intense, this can cross over into a panic attack, which can include hyperventilation, sweating, chest tension that (seems to) mimic a heart attack, lightheadedness, derealization and several other possible symptoms.

Stress is often what we refer to when we have an anxious reaction to a particular event (examples: an upcoming job interview, a conversation with a boss, an argument with a significant other, etc).

We all experience moments of stress (after all, we have very limited control of the world around us), but when the stress becomes either chronic (a constant state of anxiety) or it becomes overwhelming, it’s time to seek out help.

Common anxious thoughts are about:

  • Relationships (will this person reject me? leave me? hate me?)

  • Will people like me? [at this meeting/party/gathering]

  • Finances (will I have enough money for [my rent]?…. will I run out of money?… will I have enough money for [something vital… like food or gas for cars]?… will my [fill in the blank] lend me money I need?)

  • Job: Will my boss fire me or will I get laid off? Will someone at work be upset with me?

  • Health (how long will I have this pain? Is this pain a result of a serious illness? Will I be able to survive this illness? Will I die?)

The primary underlying emotion of anxiety is various levels of fear.

I often explain to people that the word ‘anxiety’ (and a stress reaction itself) is really another way of talking about chronic fear.

If you have been struggling with anxiety - maybe you have been dealing with panic attacks, or just a persistent state of fear and uneasiness - positive change and peace of mind are truly possible.
